What’s the difference between snorkeling and scuba?

The main difference between snorkeling and scuba diving is how you explore the ocean. Snorkeling is done at the surface, while scuba diving allows you to breathe underwater and spend more time exploring the reef with a tank, regulator, and full diving equipment.

When snorkeling, you normally wear a mask, snorkel, fins, and swimwear. You breathe through the snorkel while floating or swimming on the surface, looking down at the reef below. It is a simple and enjoyable activity for seeing shallow coral, colourful fish, turtles, and other marine life close to the surface. Snorkeling does not require a diving certification, but guests should feel comfortable in the water and follow local safety advice.

Scuba diving gives you a completely different experience. With scuba equipment, you can breathe underwater and move calmly around the reef instead of only looking down from the surface. This allows you to see marine life at eye level, explore coral formations in more detail, and enjoy a quieter and more immersive connection with the ocean.

Scuba diving requires proper equipment, instruction, and supervision. Certified divers can join guided fun dives with Max Divers. If you are new to diving, you may be able to try a Discover Scuba Diving experience with close instructor supervision. This is a great introduction to breathing underwater and discovering whether scuba diving is right for you. It is not the same as a full diving certification course.

For guests who want to become certified divers, the Open Water Diver course teaches the knowledge and practical skills needed to dive safely and confidently. We believe learning to dive should be a real learning experience, not simply a quick way to collect a certificate.
