How old do you have to be to dive?

Children can start enjoying supervised scuba activities from the age of 8 through shallow-water, pool-like introductory programmes. These experiences are designed to be fun, gentle, and closely supervised by a qualified professional.

From the age of 10, children can begin the Junior Open Water Diver course. This is a real scuba certification course adapted for younger divers, with age-appropriate training, equipment, supervision, and conservative dive planning. Junior divers continue to have specific limits and supervision requirements until they are old enough for the standard adult certification.

At Max Divers, age is only one part of the decision. Every young diver must also be comfortable in the water, in good health, able to follow instructions, and emotionally ready for the activity. We take time to assess each child individually and never rush a child into the water simply because they meet the minimum age.

Parents or legal guardians must complete the required paperwork and give consent for minors. A standard medical questionnaire is also required. If the questionnaire identifies a condition that needs further review, medical approval may be necessary before diving.

Our priority is to create a safe, positive, and enjoyable first experience. Children dive with close professional supervision, child-appropriate equipment, and a plan chosen for their confidence and ability. We keep the experience calm, personal, and conservative.

If you are planning a family diving holiday in the Maldives, contact us with your child’s age, swimming confidence, and any previous diving experience. We will help you choose the most suitable and safe programme.
