Sharks in the Maldives are one of the most exciting parts of diving here, and seeing them is a memorable experience for many guests. The sharks commonly seen around South Ari Atoll include reef sharks, nurse sharks, and whale sharks. When observed calmly and respectfully, they are generally not interested in divers.
Whale sharks are gentle filter feeders and pose no threat to divers. They feed mainly on plankton and small organisms, and encounters with them are among the most unforgettable experiences in the Maldives. Although whale sharks are peaceful, they are still large wild animals, so divers should maintain a respectful distance and never touch, chase, block, or ride them.
Like all wild animals, sharks deserve space and respect. We do not touch, chase, feed, surround, or harass them. Our approach is simple: stay calm, keep good buoyancy, watch from a respectful distance, and allow the shark to choose its own direction. This gives you the best chance of a natural and enjoyable encounter.
During every shark dive, your Max Divers guide will give a clear briefing before entering the water. We explain how to position yourself, how to stay with the group, where to look, and how to behave around marine life. We also choose suitable sites according to conditions and the experience level of the divers in the group.
