Do certifications expire?

In most cases, no—your recreational scuba certification does not expire. Your C-card remains proof that you have completed your training and are certified to dive within the limits of that certification.

However, although the certification itself remains valid, your diving skills and confidence need to stay current. If you have not been diving for a long time, it is a good idea to complete a refresher before joining regular dives. This helps you review the most important skills, become comfortable with your equipment again, and return to the water with confidence.

At Max Divers, we usually recommend a scuba refresher if you have not dived for around 12 to 24 months, especially if you have limited diving experience or do not feel fully comfortable. Divers with fewer logged dives may benefit from a refresher sooner, while experienced divers who have been diving regularly may simply need a short check and briefing.

A refresher is not a new certification course. It is a relaxed review of key theory and in-water skills.

For all divers, we review experience, recent dives, logbook information, comfort level, and local conditions before planning the dive. If we feel a refresher will be helpful, we will explain why and recommend the best option for you.

Please remember that professional-level ratings, insurance, medical fitness, and specific technical certifications may have their own renewal, activity, or documentation requirements. If you are unsure about your certification status, send us a photo of your C-card and tell us when you last dived. We will be happy to help you choose the right next step.
