You do not necessarily need to be a strong swimmer to try scuba diving for the first time. For a Discover Scuba Diving experience, we begin in calm, shallow water with close instructor supervision. Your instructor stays beside you, explains every step slowly, and helps you feel comfortable with the equipment and with breathing underwater.
However, you must be honest about your confidence in the water. Before entering the sea, we will speak with you, review the medical questionnaire, and assess whether the experience is suitable for you. If you are extremely uncomfortable in the water or feel unable to stay calm, we may recommend taking time to build water confidence before scuba diving.
For a full diving certification, such as the Open Water Diver course, swimming ability is required. Students must be able to complete the swimming and floating skills included in the course. This is essential because certification means learning to dive independently and safely not simply trying scuba once with an instructor beside you.
A Discover Scuba Diving experience is not a certification course. It is an introduction to scuba diving, designed to help you discover what breathing underwater feels like in a controlled, supportive environment. There is no pressure to continue if you do not feel ready. You can stop at any point.
At Max Divers, we take a personal approach. Our goal is not to push anyone into the water; it is to help you have a calm, safe, and enjoyable first experience. If you are unsure about your swimming ability, contact us before your trip and tell us about your comfort level in the water. We will explain the options honestly and help you choose the right experience.
